Tom's research focus is on the genetics of human resistance to infections, particularly malaria, with an emphasis on disorders of the red blood cell. He runs a large birth cohort of over 16,000 children, monitored through continuous demographic surveillance, which is linked to clinical and laboratory data through the Kilifi integrated data management system. Tom plays a key role in the management and organisation of the Demographic Surveillance System, and represents the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme in a number of scientific networks including INDEPTH, BioMalpar and MalariaGEN. Together with Dr Kirk Rockett at the University of Oxford, Tom is supervising Carolyne Ndila’s doctoral studies.
