Michael leads the CGGH ethics team, which provides support for clinical and scientific investigators when considering and responding to ethical issues, helps to form policy on issues of ethics and data ownership, and researches the ethical and social implications of genomic epidemiology. Michael’s close involvement with MalariaGEN since its inception in 2005 has led to a particular interest in the ethics of collaborative global health research. In 2012, he obtained a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award to establish the Global Health Bioethics Network to carry out ethics research and build ethics capacity in partnership with the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programmes in Thailand, Vietnam, Malawi, Kenya and South Africa. His longstanding interest in the clinical use of genetics is reflected in his work with the Genethics Club, an ethics forum for UK-based health professionals and genetics laboratory staff.
