Research Clinician

Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia

Muminatou and Fatou Sisay-Joof led a programme of work to establish a reference panel for statistical imputation by genome sequencing that will enable the development of robust and powerful methods for Genome-Wide Associations Studies (GWAS) in populations with high levels of ethnic diversity, such as The Gambia. A key component of this work was engaging with local communities in The Gambia to collect several hundred DNA samples from the most common ethnic groups whilst ensuring that appropriate procedures for ethical approval, informed consent and anonymisation. The sequencing work was conducted primarily at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and some of these samples form part of the international 1000 Genomes Project.
